BIM – A Gem (Part 1): History & Fun Facts

Barbados, affectionately called “BIM” by locals, is the most easterly island in the Caribbean chain and is known as the gem of the Caribbean Sea. It holds true to that name as a small but beautiful island of only 166 square miles, surrounded by crystal clear waters. Folklore has it that our neighbour, St.Vincent, can be seen on a clear day from one of our few peaks.

A former British colony, Barbados became independent on November 30th 1966, under the leadership of The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow.

The Queen of England is still represented by the Governor General; the country’s current G.G., Dame Sandra Mason, is the second female in the island’s history to ever hold such a position.

May 2018 was an important month in Barbados’ political history as the island saw the election of its first female Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley.

Let’s discuss the economy.

As a former British colony, Barbados’ economy was driven by the sugar industry, however, since the abolition of slavery, business for the sugar plantations gradually decreased and tourism became the new driver for the economy. “Annually, Barbados welcomes approximately 1 million visitors and has the 9th most visitor arrivals in the region and is #1 for visitor spend per capita in that top 10 category.” – Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. https://www.barbadostourisminvestment.com/tourism-profile/

Population

This island’s population is approximately 287,000; having said that and contrary to popular belief, everyone does not know everyone else!!!

Food & Fun

Barbados is known for its cou-cou and flying fish and the favourite Saturday dish of pudding and souse, both washed down with a cold glass of mauby or a Banks Beer, while enjoying the island’s national sport, cricket!

Here is some homework for next time. Are there any festivals celebrated in Barbados?

Answer in the comments below! The answers will be posted in the next blog!

Stay tuned …“I gone!”
